LOUISIANA 1932-40 NUMBER PLOT

Different number blocks were assigned for 3-5 horsepower classes

AND 6 branch offices. From 1931 through 1934, there were 5

classes, while from 1935 through 1940, there were only 3 classes.

In 1931-40, the 4-5-digit plates appear to be only for the lowest

horsepower class, with none seen above #56-000 except 1931-32 when

there were 13 branches instead of 6.

"The Pelican, Louisiana's official symbol, will continue riding on

the state's automobile license at least another year...The plates

for the minimum horsepower group will be two inches shorter than

licenses for the upper power brackets..."

"To Mrs. Ann Marble Lowe...goes the distinction of buying the

first automobile license plate for 1933...She received No.

"License plates were received here for 13,700 passenger cars,

divided into five classifications..."

"The first person to obtain a license for the coming year for

his car was Tom Hicks of West Monroe, to whom was issued the

first two licenses. They were for two Ford cars and the numbers

assigned were 160,001 and 270,001."

"Licenses are numbered according to horsepower and locality. Each

of Louisiana's six bureaus is allotted a certain range of numbers,

which are distributed according to horsepower of vehicles."

is the initial number in the box containing plates for automobiles

having more than 31 horsepower. Other numbers for passenger cars

will be 25-001 for cars under 22 h.p., and 143-001 for cars

Effective 1/1/1941, horsepower classes were eliminated and all

passenger plates were issued for a flat $3 fee. Until more lists of

classes and office assignments are located, all numbers are being
